The Crusading Newsman Who Taught Americans to Give to the Poor

Men waiting in the Bread Line at the Bowery Mission, New York

This post for the Smithsonian’s What It Means to Be American Series describes the life and work of Christian philanthropist and newspaper editor Louis Klopsch (1852-2910). By insisting that philanthropy was not only for the elite, but was a duty for everyday citizens, Klopsch expanded the practice of charity in the United States.
